Hybrid vehicles combine an internal combustion engine with one or more electric motors and a high-voltage battery system. While this technology can reduce fuel consumption and emissions, a hybrid is still a complex vehicle with many of the same servicing needs as a conventional car. What happens when a hybrid needs servicing? A hybrid car may not always give you an obvious warning that something needs attention. Changes such as reduced fuel economy, unusual engine noise, hesitation, warning lights, rough running or changes in how the vehicle switches between petrol and electric power can indicate an issue.

These symptoms can have several causes, including overdue engine oil and filter changes, worn brakes, cooling-system problems, electrical faults or issues with sensors and control systems. A diagnostic scan and inspection can help identify the actual cause rather than simply treating the symptom. Do new hybrid cars need servicing? Yes. New doesn't mean maintenance-free. Hybrid vehicles still require scheduled servicing according to the manufacturer's maintenance requirements. Depending on the vehicle, this can include engine oil and filter replacement, brake inspections, fluid checks, tyre checks, cabin and air filters, cooling-system inspections and electronic diagnostics.

Servicing also provides an opportunity to check components unique to hybrid vehicles, including the high-voltage battery cooling system and associated electrical components. Why hybrid servicing matters Regular servicing helps maintain reliability, fuel efficiency and braking performance while identifying developing problems before they become more expensive repairs. Keeping a complete service history is also important for owners of newer vehicles.Regular servicing helps maintain reliability, fuel efficiency and braking performance while identifying developing problems before they become more expensive repairs. Keeping a complete service history is also important for owners of newer vehicles.

An independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre such as Bysouths Garage can service many modern vehicles in accordance with the manufacturer's servicing requirements, helping owners maintain their vehicle without necessarily having to return to a dealership. Hybrid cars in Wentworth and the surrounding area Wentworth's hot, dry conditions, long drives and dusty Australian roads can place additional demands on cooling systems, filters, tyres and brakes. Regular inspections are particularly worthwhile if your hybrid regularly travels long distances, carries loads or operates on regional roads. Tips to help prevent hybrid problems Follow the manufacturer's scheduled service intervals. Don't ignore warning lights or changes in vehicle behaviour. Keep air intakes and vents around the hybrid battery cooling system clear. Check tyre pressures regularly, particularly before longer trips. Have unusual noises, braking changes or reduced fuel economy investigated early. Regenerative braking allows many hybrids to recover some of the vehicle's kinetic energy during deceleration and use it to recharge the high-voltage battery. This can reduce reliance on the friction brakes, but it doesn't mean brake inspections can be skipped. Hybrid Car Servicing FAQs Can a hybrid car be serviced by an independent workshop? Yes. Many hybrids can be serviced by appropriately equipped and trained independent workshops. Always ensure the workshop has the correct equipment, information and training for your particular vehicle. Will servicing a new hybrid at an independent workshop void the warranty? Australian consumer and warranty protections do not generally require routine servicing to be performed exclusively by the vehicle manufacturer or dealer. The vehicle still needs to be serviced according to the manufacturer's requirements, using appropriate parts, fluids and procedures. Do hybrid cars need engine oil changes? Yes. If the vehicle has an internal combustion engine, it still requires engine oil and filter servicing at the intervals specified by the manufacturer. Are hybrid brakes maintenance-free? No. Regenerative braking can reduce friction-brake use, but brake components still need to be inspected for wear, corrosion and correct operation. Does hot weather affect a hybrid battery? Heat can increase the demands placed on battery cooling systems. Keeping cooling vents clear and having the system inspected as part of scheduled servicing can help maintain correct operation. Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Bysouths Garage in Wentworth, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Bysouths Garage, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Bysouths Garage for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.

Tyres are one of the most important safety components on any vehicle. Whether you drive a passenger car, 4WD, SUV, hybrid, EV, van, ute or light truck, your tyres are the only part of the vehicle that maintains constant contact with the road. Proper tyre maintenance not only improves safety and handling but can also help extend tyre life and reduce long-term operating costs.

At Bysouths Garage in Wentworth, we regularly see tyres that wear out prematurely due to issues that could have been identified and corrected much earlier. As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre, our team provides professional tyre inspections, wheel alignments, balancing, rotations, puncture repairs, pressure testing and expert tyre advice to help motorists get the most from their tyres. Why Tyres Matter Modern tyres are designed to provide grip, stability, braking performance and ride comfort. They also play a significant role in fuel efficiency and vehicle handling. For hybrid and electric vehicles, tyre condition can even affect driving range and energy consumption.

Because tyres are a significant investment to replace, regular maintenance is essential to maximise their lifespan and ensure safe operation. Tyres and Wet Weather Safety Wet weather can significantly reduce the amount of grip available between your tyres and the road surface, increasing stopping distances and reducing vehicle control. Tyres rely on their tread pattern to channel water away from the contact patch, helping maintain traction during braking, cornering and acceleration.

As tyres wear, their ability to disperse water decreases, increasing the risk of aquaplaning, where the tyre rides on a thin layer of water rather than maintaining contact with the road. Under-inflated, over-inflated or unevenly worn tyres can further compromise wet weather performance.

Regular tyre inspections, pressure checks and wheel alignments at Bysouths Garage in Wentworth can help ensure your tyres provide optimal grip and braking performance when driving conditions become challenging. Understanding Different Tyre Types Not all tyres are designed for the same purpose. Choosing the right tyre depends on your vehicle type, driving habits and road conditions. Passenger Vehicle Tyres Designed primarily for comfort, fuel economy, quiet operation and everyday driving on sealed roads. Highway Terrain (HT) 4WD Tyres Suitable for drivers who spend most of their time on sealed roads but still require the capability of a 4WD tyre. All Terrain (AT) Tyres A popular choice for 4WD owners who regularly travel on both sealed roads and unsealed surfaces. They provide a balance between on-road comfort and off-road durability. Mud Terrain (MT) Tyres Built for serious off-road conditions with aggressive tread patterns designed for mud, sand and rough terrain. These tyres generally produce more road noise and can wear faster on sealed roads. Hybrid and EV-Specific Tyres Many hybrid and electric vehicles use tyres specifically designed to handle increased vehicle weight while reducing rolling resistance. These tyres help maximise battery efficiency, reduce road noise and improve vehicle range.

The team at Bysouths Garage can advise on the most suitable tyre for your vehicle and driving requirements. Uneven Tyre Wear Often Indicates a Problem Uneven tyre wear is one of the most common warning signs that something isn't quite right.

Tyres wearing heavily on one edge may indicate poor wheel alignment, while irregular wear patterns can be caused by suspension issues, incorrect tyre pressures or wheel balance problems.

Ignoring uneven wear can significantly shorten tyre life and negatively affect handling, braking performance and fuel economy.

Professional wheel alignment checks can help identify and correct these issues before they become costly. The Importance of Correct Tyre Pressure Tyres are engineered to operate within specific pressure ranges. Both under-inflation and over-inflation can cause problems. Under-Inflated Tyres Increased tyre wear on the outer edges. Higher fuel consumption. Excessive heat build-up. Increased risk of tyre failure. Reduced steering response. Over-Inflated Tyres Excessive wear in the centre of the tread. Reduced traction and braking performance. Harsher ride quality. Increased vulnerability to impact damage. Regular pressure testing helps ensure tyres are operating safely and efficiently under Australian driving conditions. Why Professional Tyre Inspections Matter Many tyre problems aren't visible when a vehicle is sitting on the ground. Internal sidewall damage, cuts, bulges, punctures and abnormal wear can often be hidden on the inside of the tyre.

At Bysouths Garage, tyres can be professionally inspected with the vehicle raised on a hoist, allowing our technicians to examine the entire tyre surface. This often reveals issues that vehicle owners simply cannot see during routine visual checks at home.

Early detection of damage can help prevent unexpected tyre failures and improve overall road safety. Additional Services That Help Extend Tyre Life Wheel Alignments Correct wheel alignment helps tyres wear evenly, improves steering accuracy and can reduce fuel consumption. Wheel Balancing Balanced wheels reduce vibration, improve ride comfort and help prevent irregular tyre wear. Tyre Rotation Rotating tyres at recommended intervals allows wear to be distributed more evenly across all four tyres, helping maximise tyre lifespan. Puncture Repairs Where safe and appropriate, professional puncture repairs can restore tyre serviceability and help avoid unnecessary replacement costs. Same Day Tyre Replacement If replacement tyres are required, Bysouths Garage offers same day tyre replacement, subject to availability. Many motorists don't realise that a tyre can suffer internal structural damage after hitting a pothole, kerb or road hazard, even when no external damage is visible. This is one reason why professional inspections are recommended following significant impacts. Symptoms That Should Never Be Ignored Arrange a tyre inspection if you notice: Uneven tread wear. Vehicle pulling to one side. Steering wheel vibration. Reduced grip in wet weather. Visible cracks, bulges or cuts. Frequent pressure loss. Increased road noise. Tyres FAQs Can wheel alignment affect fuel economy? Yes. Incorrect wheel alignment increases rolling resistance, forcing the engine or electric motor to work harder and potentially increasing fuel or energy consumption. Are EV tyres different from conventional tyres? Many EV-specific tyres are designed to carry additional battery weight while reducing rolling resistance and road noise to improve efficiency and range. How often should tyres be rotated? Rotation intervals vary between manufacturers, but many vehicles benefit from tyre rotation approximately every 10,000 kilometres or as recommended during servicing. Can a tyre lose pressure without having a puncture? Yes. Pressure loss can occur through valve leaks, bead leaks, rim corrosion, temperature changes or minor tyre damage. Why is balancing important if my tyres look fine? Even small imbalances can create vibrations that lead to uneven tyre wear, reduced comfort and increased stress on suspension components.
